Motorsport Safety - the Peter Procter Story - fireproof
He is on the left. You might recognize the guy on the right. That's my dad, Eric Jackson. Here you can see the two of them, probably in late 1990, having a drink together at a party. They are old friends. Peter is one of my father's heroes. There's nothing special about this photo --Two old York people are chatting. But they all have wonderful stories to tell.
Today is Peter's story.
He is five or six years younger than my father.Yes, they are all from Yorkshire, but on top of that, they are all racing. They met early in their careers and both attended rallies and competitions around the world.
I'm not sure, but I think they probably met for the first time in the Monte Carlo rally.Peter played in Le Mans and some Grand Prix but his racing career ended in 1966.The picture was actually taken a few years ago in 1966, but I wanted to show you so you can see why my dad is in his autobiography, he called his friend "a young man who looked very pleasant ".
On 1966, Peter competed in Goodwood in Fort Anglia. This is not a small club activity.Goodwood was a prestigious British tour at the time, with legends such as Jim Clark and Jack blaben. You can guess what happened from the above photo.
It's in the first lap.
His car crashed from behind and exploded in a fireball.See how inadequate safety equipment is.The two guys you see are wearing regular street clothes instead of today's fire-proof Nomex suits, gloves, balaclavas and shoes.Look at the poor fire extinguishers.Yes, it's people who are fighting the fire.
Read my dad's description in the black box below. He was airlifted to the hospital where he was found thirdHe was burned 65% of his body.He is unlikely to survive. However, thanks to his own strength and health, coupled with the tireless efforts of the surgeon, he survived, many of whom had worked on burned pilots during World War II.
Peter has had a lot of surgery over the years. He must have suffered a lot, but my father often said his friend was brave.More is coming. He was determined not to suffer as much as he did for other racing drivers.
At the back of this page, there was an advertisement for Peter.Despite a lot of surgery, this is not a beautiful sight. How brave a person who will appear in racing publications around the world isHope other racing drivers will be spared similar damage? In this ad, he described the new fire racing suits and equipment.
He explained that the rules of the car were really loose at the time. Some people are cynical about knowing whether Peter's decision to appear in an advertisement has an additional incentive, that is, money.No-The person who knows this person suspects the sincerity of the reason for his presence in the advertisement and may point out to the cynical person that yes, he received the fee for his presence.
..And quickly donated it to the mackindo burn center where he was treated.See below.Today, the burn department, known as the BlondMcIndoe Research Foundation, is as busy as ever with treating children, soldiers and women...Anyone who needs expert care.As you can see in the picture above, the Foundation has a list of outstanding customers.

Peter wrote a book about his life in the early 2000 s, but unfortunately it is out of print now.But you can read about Eric Jackson in his autobiography.Eric has a few heroes.Peter is one of them. One of the others is also a huge advocate for the safety of racing sports, I think most people, even non-His name, especially the English and Scottish, is familiar.
Can you guess? The other is the legendary motorsport figure, although not the driver, but his name is what anyone who knows about Ford Motor will know, especially the history of their competition division...Especially the Ford Formula series is named after him.Any guesses?See the video about the organization that saved Peter.
Cry, please donate.
(Some pictures are not very pleasant.
