Margaret McIntyre's house, named after the first female MP and female tour guide commissioner in the state of Tasmania, was advertised yesterday for the July auction.Shayne Harris, an agent for Roberts business, said a large number of calls reflected "huge interest ".The hotel's next life, he says, could be a boutique bed and breakfast, a restaurant or a private home.
Mr.
Harris said that the house has been the home of the Girl Guide in Tasmania state since 1950 and is being sold because the organization "cannot justify the retention of the property due to insufficient use ".The tour guide will set the meeting hall at the back.This elegant Park St house was awarded to William Barnes by Governor George Arthur in 1837.
Mr.
Barnes owns a huge piece of land on which he planted 12 hectares of hops and built a brewery between Margaret Street and Patterson Street to reach the Tamar River.In 1878, the rental value of the housing site was 13 pounds.It was William Barnes who donated the cataract cliff site to the city to "have fun with its citizens ".
By 1879, part of the land in Barnes Park will be a family home for James Redding, whose small house is either expanded by Mr Redding or replaced by architect Harry Conway.The property hosts the chief female guide, the wife of Sir Baden Powell, founder of the Scout, Ms. Baden Powell, whose books are signed by guides from all over the world.
